It's an old term from extremist feminists who believe having "man" in "woman" is degrading so they add the X to "fix it". It's the same reason why some people will say "womyn" instead of "women":

In all cases, it comes from a fundamental unawareness of the etymology of the word and the fact that the "man" part of "woman" represents that they're a human, ironically turning the word "woman" into something that denies their humanity.
It's worse actually. It's a response to the made up word "womyn" that was used by a prior generation of wokes to refer to women wiithout the word men invovled. Unfortunately, these prior woktivists were also anti trans and excluded transwomen from "womyn". So woker wokes had to come up with womxn to correct the unwoke woke word womyn. wokewokewoke
