Not sure why someone would settle for that. You'd have to give up a lot of pride to be happy with being the "lesser of two evils". And no I'm not saying all them are like this but its certainly prevalent, because like people said the population is extremely homogenous.

I think the younger generation is starting to change, but trust me I have seen many people complain about living in Japan as a white person. Even if you fully immerse yourself in the culture and speak Japanese fluently they will always view you as a foreigner. I also have heard horror stories about trying to rent a place as a white person, because many Japanese won't rent to foreigners.

Part of this also comes because in Japan like 98% of the population is pure Japanese so it's very rare to even interact with non-Japanese people often.

Yup. Some years ago I listened to a BBC news documentary with one of their senior reporters, the Japanese correspondent. I believe she's Japanese/Korean and even she faced discrimination. They mocked her for eye shape and stuff whilst us outsiders probably can't tell stuff like that. So imagine having different skin tone. I think very slowly they are opening up to more foreigners. They don't really have a choice because they have a population crisis and desperately need immigration. Might be too little too late.
