From my understanding, in Japanese "to head north" is an old literary expression meaning "to give up". It's some sort of untranslatable pun where the character for "north" can also mean "surrender", or something like that. The lyrics of the song aren't exactly literal but are essentially about facing an extremely difficult situation and opting to just give up and move on with your life, rather than continuing to struggle and suffer. That fits the upbeat lyrics, I suppose. Finding contentment in moving on with your life. That feels like a very un-Western approach to things, haha, but I love it.
