Were now in the 60+ tier. Here, Im still generally lukewarm about things, but the songs are still above average. This song gets high mostly on Appreciation: its a solid pop song that conveys its message of music as the universal unifier really well. Its also shooting for the inspirational (aspirational? Both?) message of music as a tool for expressing yourself and following your dreams. Cant argue with that!

89. Eddie Vedder - Hard Sun

Fun fact: after the initial listen, this song was last place.

Remember that the current last placer got a score of 4/100.

On the second listen, it was bumped up enough to become the first song in the ranking to get above average in every category.

So what changed? I dont know. At first I found the guitar strumming repetitive, and Vedders vocals were all over the place. But I learned to appreciate it. Its a plaintive song almost about mourning, and the subdued feel is appropriate. The chorus is still repetitive but I dont mind it nearly as much, and Im able to appreciate the overwhelming melancholy reflection the song evokes.

Lesson to take away: always, always relisten.
