Obviously men were always expected to work. But the chance and level of reward was different. When the job market focused on men to the exclusion of women (which obviously was ridiculous oppression that had to end), it was easier for men to find work. When the main expectation of a man who wanted to marry was that he have a job to support a family, it was easier for men to find a wife. When man's physical power couldn't easily be emulated by machinery, standard blue collar work paid good wages.

Now that men are less "necessary" relative to women and automation, finding a worthile niche in society is more difficult for them than it was for their fathers.

I feel like we have much less conditioned knowledge of women's sexuality as a society because it was repressed for so long, and in certain ways still is. Really an unfortunate situation.
