The CRM and its leaders were not popular among white Americans. Then and now even, if the vast majority of the white population werent in support of them. Nothing would have changed. Period. Same goes for womans and LGBT rights the past century. Whites have the numbers, the wealth, the power, influence, everything. Not degrading the heros of things like the civil rights movement but that's just the reality of it.
