I also think it's dumb to buy expensive jewelry just because you like how it looks, but at least that's more justifiable than "I want this shiny thing so other people will be jealous of me." I don't. I don't really think it's any different than other things you don't need or need to buy. I don't really need video games or tv, but I like to have them. I also don't need books except for one required either by school or work. And honestly, many books and video games you could rent from the library. In the end, there's a lot of things people don't need (or don't need to buy), but we still do.
