At the very least if you pick up guitar and get some lessons (well below your $5k budget) you'll be playing chords and songs in a few months. How much farther you want to go is up to you. Seeing as you have a wife it may be more worthwhile to get into a manlier hobby like woodworking, auto mechanics, carpentry. Something that will save you and your family some money and make you feel useful. Your wife will brag about you too :p As someone who plays multiple instruments I still want to learn some handy man stuff.
