"Both sides are bad" is dumb because it's lazy and typically used as a deflection when one side is visibly doing way more actual bad things than the other

But a lot of the time when the "the other side is worse" defence is used, it's a case of "very bad" vs "even worse again". Eventually, there's a line beyond which all that matters is "they're past that line", not how far past it they are.
