I guess a better way to put it is that people are inherently selfish and thinking/acting selflessly is one of the hardest things for a person to do, if it's not entirely impossible. I believe theres a hero in all of us, that keeps us honest, gives us strength, makes us noble. And finally gets us to die with pride.
