As long as you get the inverted ocarina and head straight for the 4 giants, you should be fine. Or get the 4 owl statues close and reset and start from there. I remember either not having to reset, or reset only once. But beelining it can definitely help with not resetting if paired with the inverted ocarina...

Yeah, that's why I said...

On the skipping ahead stuff:
I'd advise waiting till much later for Majora's Mask map. It doesn't give much in the way of weapon upgrades, it punishes you w/ a map reset if you don't complete it fast enough, and while other maps (like Twilight) are harder due to increased damage taken, MM is harder primarily b/c the enemies are damage sponges. So if you go in at low level, you'll miss a bunch of A ranks and then either have to complete the map before going back for the rewards or get them and possibly be forced to reset the map.
It was like one of the last maps I did.

Actually completing maps really isn't the main goal of doing them. It's to get the rewards. If you do MM map early, you'll have to pass up on a lot of them to finish the map first. Better to just wait to do the map, there isn't even anything major you're missing out on like weapon upgrades, mostly cosmetics.

EDIT: To be clear, even "beelining it" will take a while. Parts of the map are locked out by needing a certain mask, which will force you to go in side paths for decent stretches, because there will be only one square you can obtain that mask w/o already having one.
