Here's a reddit comment that explains it perfectly Dark Souls is not a JRPG. This is the typical stuff you see posted by people who have no idea of the history behind either country's RPG developments. If you want to argue that it's a modern distinction sure, but it's extremely artificial and not based on actual history.
