What sets it apart is that FF 6 was designed for the split-party mechanic much better than those misguided moments in which FF 7 and 8 attempted it. 7 and 8's combat / character strength relied heavily on Materia and GF / Spell Junctions respectively, and it didn't make sense to gimp you main party by splitting up these resources evenly between all available party members. FF 6 didn't have that problem, as combat abilities were innate to the character and Espers weren't nearly as essential for actual combat (and were much more plentiful and easier to swap out). --- Simple questions deserve long-winded answers that no one will bother to read. ...
