If you're firing real guns, in "realistic" scenarios, then reloading should be somewhat realistic. The weapons sound, look, and somewhat feel how they're supposed to. The animations are all legit. Yet your ammo count is magic. That's such a small piece of it. I'm not asking for an entire re-imagining of what COD or any of these games are.

Right. And games should have more moment to moment variances in gameplay where someone enters a firefight with a full magazine and one with 1/3rd left. I think moments like that would create interesting dynamics much needed in a genre that hasn't had a lot of innovation in years.
