Idk that there's anything to be said that paints a clearer picture of just how bad Detroit is than that: you can buy a home for under $2k.
What those stories tend to leave out, though, is that many of those homes (and some are sold for even less, like in the hundreds) is that they often have tens of thousands of dollars of unpaid property taxes (and possibly other fees).

Detroit's riverfront is nice and could be better. Many efforts have been made to revitalize the city. Corruption is one reason for the failure. System issues are also a factor. Detroit is a city with so much potential and so little progress.
