My early impressions are that the game similar in scope to Ys VIII in terms of size. It being a giant prison city over stranded on a mysterious island is a nice change of pace. Graphics are a bit more unpolished, but the game had a shorter development cycle so I can see why. Trails influence continues to be felt as there's now even more cutscenes than before, but the story seems really good this time around also it's probably the darkest and more mature Ys game to date.

The gameplay as always where it shines though. Combat feels great and the flash dodges and flash guards return from the past few games. They changed the party system a bit so that enemy weaknesses are determined by elemental affinity instead of weapon type. In practice it works the same, but offers greater variety of characters to switch between mid-combat.

The real star here is the movement around the world. Thanks to everyone's new Monstrum powers you can explore the world in ways you never could before in previous Falcom games which also leads to more complex world and dungeon design. Everyone has a unique power, but as long as they're in your party anyone can use them at any time. For example Adol can teleport to ledges and overhangs to get a higher view of the area, White Cat can run up any wall, the next character grows wings and can glide from higher spots, etc. They put a ton of collectibles on the map assassin's creed style for you to get using these abilities.
