The first episode of Lovecraft Coubtry deals heavily in that stuff and it's pretty shocking to think that isn't actually made up. It really happened It was like that for a large portion of the country, especially as more blacks began migrating from the south to the north during the Great Migration, the north started taking on more Jim Crow-like tactics. A large number of sundown towns like the one in the first couple of episodes of Lovecraft Country were not only in the south, but in the midwest too. There's one in Illinois that my uncle goes out of his way to bypass as he heads back home from Texas to Chicago, it's called Anna, Illinois (really that whole county area).
