Part of the problem seems to be they feel like they should be able to live where they want to, instead of where they can afford to.

There is nothing wrong with living in Midwestern states.

I suspect that a lot of the people who talk about only wanting to live in big cities, because smaller cities, suburbs, and towns are too boring are a lot like people who spend thousands of dollars on cutting edge PC hardware just to play Minecraft. They're going to want to live in LA because it's trendy, but they'll probably just spend most of their time on the internet at home anyway.
There's a lot of generalizing here.

The fact is, millennials have higher student debt (boomers told us we needed to go to college), housing costs are higher, and available houses are older meaning that there's likely going to be some work needed on them.
