Viruses get weaker as they mutate. They get more contagious to try and stay alive but weaken themselves by doing so.

They mutate because they fuse themselves with the DNA of their host, hence the regional differences between strains.
This COULD have negative consequences in the long run, because since not everyone reacts the same way to the virus different outcomes may become possible...
