When you live somewhere it regularly goes below -20, batteries can drain or freeze up. Now once you get it running and the alternator does its thing, you're fine. Boosters exist to start the car in a pinch, because a cold battery in winter doesn't automatically need replacing. And the new battery could end up the exact same way.
