Prior to today, I would have agreed with the sentiment of the quote in the topic title.

But this goes beyond the malfeasance demonstrated by Buchanan's sitting on his hands (not withstanding whether there was anything to do; I still treat the throwing up the hands as a failure on its own) or by Johnson's handling of Reconstruction.

This is its own class. It's inexcusable. Everyone who has encouraged this behavior, expressly or tacitly, by a sitting president needs to be held accountable. This date should follow their names for the rest of their lives and be carved as the only epitaph on their tombstones to remind everyone who ever lays eyes upon it that they fostered every iota of the chipping away at fundamental norms and tradition that have ensured orderly transitions of power in this country since its inception.

They own this. They made this monster. They grew it. They nurtured it. And this is what they've wrought.
