Speaking as a manager.... unless it was an emergency or trying to fill a shift gap, I'm not a particularly big fan of a boss reaching out to an employee during their time off, and that's doubly the case for someone that works a normal job with weekends off.
I never make my employees work on the weekend. Nor do I ever expect them to check their email during the weekend. But that does occasionally mean I give them a quick text to let them know if we need an earlier meeting on Monday. Since I normally I give them to let their start and end times and I wanted to make sure I caught him early.

I completely agree and if the decision were 100% up to me he would have been fired this Friday. Unfortunately, this was not 100% up to me. I just have to be the executioner here.
