He ran off afterwards instead of checking on what he shot. That's because if he somehow did make the mistake, he realized what he did and ran off, leaving the teen to die. Even if we believe his BS, the moment he fled was when he lost any chance at claiming he didn't do anything wrong. If I hit someone with a car then speed up and drive off, that's a hit and run charge. Even if it's some accident, to flee afterwards is just... Awful.
