I understand this point of view, but people didn't have porn back before porn was even a thing in American thing, and I cannot recall ever hearing about sexual assaults being more common place.

I hope you realise that things were covered up or simply ignored way more in the "old days". I daresay it was far more common then because there was a culture of impunity for the perpetrators, and just men in general. Things like husbands beating their wives was just accepted. I made my mum laugh because I told her straight if I was a girl in her time I would have gone to prison over some guy troubling me constantly. It was simply the norm. Not even talking about constant workplace shenanigans where it was mostly men and a few women. That shite can't fly nowadays.

And there was only shame for the victims. Especially in the religious circles. Well in reality people were just as nasty as ever. It was either just brushed off and "tolerated" by women or kept hush hush. Even worse if you were a male victim. Now things still get covered up but it's harder to do because either people are more comfortable talking or the perps get exposed by their careless internet use or keeping certain files etc. The digital age makes it possible to track down such people where before there was either no evidence or only physical evidence which disappeared quick. Digital evidence lasts forever.
