I suppose there's an unwritten, implied requirement that the pattern must include all the numbers shown. Without that you can come up with multiple solutions by just ignoring some of the numbers. Logic problems always need precise language as to not be ambiguous. Math nerds, is there some specific mathematical definition of "pattern" that would clear up any confusion?

That explanation of the answer is straight up wrong... It implies that the 6 in the top right of the middle box should be an 8 instead, as if it's a typo.

It's an 8 in the original problem. It is a typo.
