Also considering SMT 1 isn't even the actual first game in the franchise I'd argue that it was the game that started the actual multiverse. There was not established multiverse in any of the games to that point. It has retroactive continuity yes, but regardless of how you want to consider it Nine is explicitly set between SMT 1 and 2 and it wasn't meant to be an alternate timeline nor is it considered one now. I'm not arguing when nine takes place in the timeline.
