it appealed to a lot of people who've never played an online pvp game before, and stuck them into the same matchmaker as people like me who've been taking abuse through their headset since they were very young. things like adding private profiles by default, no real scoreboard, quickly-evaporating match history, etc are clearly to coddle the former group and the game suffers as a competitive experience for it.

I have never played another online game with as many people who hide from voice chat, shut down at the very first sign of criticism, are terrified of having their play commented on in any way, etc than in Overwatch. It isn't even close.

One time in a stack of people I only somewhat knew, I played the old "good players on fire" joke. Immediately one of them typed a paragraph about how hurtful that was and how they felt personally targeted. A couple other people even rushed to her defense.

This would never happen in another game like this. Seriously.
