Describe dead?

There's lots of software that can pull data from a corrupted drive but if it simply doesn't spin, you aren't going to get very far.

I use a SATA to USB device in addition with software to read data from thrashed drives.

But if the hardware is too beat up, your data may be as good as gone. Disassembling the drive usually doesn't work often, in my experience.
