The best solution to the "too many sword wielders" thing would have been to change Ike and Lucina to their Brave versions from Fire Emblem Heroes, then have Chrom fill the "Marth but without the tipper mechanic" niche instead of Lucina. Ike's moveset could remain virtually the same even giving him an axe instead of a sword, and they could cook up a lance-based moveset for Lucina to use. It would have been nice cross-promotion for Heroes, and it wouldn't break the main series canon because they can both use those weapon types after promoting in their own respective games.

Plus, the "too many sword wielders" argument being greatly weakened by these changes would also mean Byleth's reveal becomes far less divisive.
