I'm really hoping for a 2.0 update at some point that includes a whole bunch of upgrades and things, and more villager interactions is one of the big things they need to implement. That said I still go through neighbors pretty regularly, so I still get a sense of transience on my island. I think they even increased how often campers show up or villagers ask to leave in one of the recent updates.
