conversely, the slaveholding south was the side that was pushing for it, leading to the controversial compromise.

taking into consideration that the alt-right, with partial roots in movements idealizing the old south, and its more politically mainstream cousins (e.g., paleos) are opposed to factoring undocumented immigrants (lacking civil or voting rights) into determining electoral college apportionment, there's a strong case to be made there's been a reversal on that particular question.
