Ive always felt like its a little weird because I dont really know how its supposed to be pronounced. Ive heard that in Brazil theyve started adopting Latine as a gender-neutral term which makes more sense to me. I believe Latine is older, could be wrong, but also not sure why the outrage children don't cry about that one.
