Depends if you are saying it in a provoking way, if the person likes you or many other factors in how they might act. However as you started a avoidable situation you shouldn't be shocked when there is consequences.

you don't seem to understand that it isn't his fault he got hurt by some very hot-headed and immature people.

If he carried on walking off the tram this situation would have been avoided. He decided to get involved. How is this not his own fault?
