What an age gap like that does do is clearly separate the responsibilities of the relationship. There is no mutual, we're equals, 50/50 responsibility nonsense. The older one wears the pants and the younger one acknowledges this and reaps the obvious benefits of being with someone who's established in their life with years more experience. This dynamic works, but only if both parties are willing to accept the trade-offs and responsibilities.

I reject your premise that every relationship with that kind of age gap fits into this mold, largely because the "responsibilities of the relationship" are not something set in stone and vary in significant ways from relationship to relationship. You seem to be using your own standards and expectations as universal rules of what a relationship has to be.
