Remember when you were a kid, and you'd your finger an inch away from your sibling's face, and when they rightfully got annoyed by this, you'd say "I'm not touching you?"

There are a decent amount of public figures who, recognizing that being an open and avowed racist in the style of Strom Thurmond is not currently accepted by the broader public, effectively play this same game. They know what words not to utter, what lines not to cross to avoid closing that inch of space between themselves and clear bigotry. When called upon this, they've provided enough plausible deniability to give people a way to say "show me proof" or "the left thinks everything is racist." Oftentimes they end up slipping, and the right has to excuse away their feigned inability to see what everybody else had recognized for years.

This is what Trump has done, but it's also the Southern Strategy, the Proud Boys, Milo, so on and so forth.

Joe Biden was very close associates with like this and worked with them to construct the system of mass incarceration. Including Strom Thurmond himself (1986 Comprehensive Crime Control Act)

So a lot of people stood out this election because both sides were shown to be working for the cause of white supremacy
