You junction a GF to a character, then various spells to stats to improve them. This includes elemental/status attack and defense. Initiative GF ability junctioned helps with Malboro, as does pain, berserk, sleep, confuse on status defense - you can usually use degenerator on them before they get a turn like that, and those defenses should keep you alive if you do get hit by bad breath.
