I read a book recently by prominent positive psychologist Dr. Martin Seligman that talked about how there's been a waning of the commons, including family. He said that the waning of common institutions could be one of the reasons why people are depressed at such incredibly high rates these years (since WWII years IIRC).

On the other hand, there are many non-traditional family forms, so it's good to be open to things like adoption, foster care, single parent households, etc.
