A greater percentage of republicans voted for Trump this time than in 2016. Biden got votes more rich, less minority. I'm sure he did get votes that wouldn't vote for a more progressive candidate, and that has nothing to do with whether a more progressive candidate would have done as well. There is simply no way to ever know, but I anecdotally know many who would have only voted for a more progressive candidate that didn't vote Biden. Our experiences in small numbers mean nothing.
We don't actually know this until the exit polls are reweighted to the actual results (and even then they'll probably be less accurate than normal due to the difficulties of dealing with mail-in votes). In any case I think another part of this is that some 2016 Republicans have left the party since (we know this is true for party identity, though I don't know if there's data on people taking the extra step to change their party registration).
