Anyone considering breaking into a home will normally be deterred if they believe a dog lives there. Whoever can potentially break into your home doesn't want a dog barking, doesn't know what kind of dog and it's an extra obstacle they probably don't want to deal with. Maybe leave a couple steel bowls outside, or a leash somewhere outdoors that can be seen. Things that tell passers by that a dog lives there.
