I feel like you would just do it if you really wanted your illness to take over and make you go through with it. I could see this as someone getting to the point they know they can't be trusted and trying to get someone else to force what needs to be done to be done. Which is, getting this kid away from society for a little bit and figuring out the deeper problem. Obviously his mom is a problem if her first reaction is that her son shouldn't be held accountable for his terrifying threats to a large group of kids.
