Jennifer Lawrence played a character described as "olive-skinned" in The Hunger Games, Ben Affleck played a mixed-race real-life person in Argo (although said person didn't object to the casting), and Tilda Swinton played an Asian character in the MCU. Those movies were largely able to ride out any controversy while stuff like Ghost in the Shell, The Great Wall, and Gods of Egypt didn't.
