His Alice in Wonderland movies were fine, they suited his style well. They're just also not terribly interesting. Dark Shadows is a worse version of this where I didn't even find it particularly charming and it was just Burton spinning his wheels. Alice is at least carried by the source material.

Charlie and the Chocolate factory though. Oof. That one was almost a fine alternative take but then it just absolutely fucks everything up towards the end.
