nah there's always hype around them with special praise for tom cruise and his stunts.

the most overlooked and underappreciated trilogy of movies in recent times is definitely the new planet of the apes movies.

they appeared, had some decent popularity and critical acclaim and then are never brought up again

Actually I'd like to change my answer to this. Definitely an overlooked series and I don't know anyone who is a fellow fan of them. Rise of the planet of the apes was one of my biggest shock movies in the 2010s in terms of how quickly I fell in love with it without expecting to.

Dawn was still good but missing what I liked about Rises (really liked james franco and and john lithgow and andy serkis performance speaks for itself)

I actually only watched War a month or so ago, and... it was okay. Still had a lot of heart and good performances but wasn't nearly as unique as the first 2 and I didn't like it as much. Ok ending.

But Rise, Rise was just amazing. The possibilities that movie presented for a good rebooted franchise was immeasurable.
