Either that or the band needs to pass the awkward period where they transition from uncool to 'classic'. Pretty much every big band has that weird phase that they gotta get through until they come out the other side looking nice. Metallica nearly imploded and now on the other side of it (the Some Kind of Monster documentary, the St. Anger album, etc.), they're legends. The early 90's alt rock also turned 'classic' in the last decade or so.

A lot of bands break up or go on hiatus when that period starts creeping in (ie. Smashing Pumpkins, Soundgarden). But some stay together and tough it out.

It's just as time goes on, the band gets old as do their fans, who become vocal about how much they miss "the good old days". Younger people who weren't around back then are forced to hear these old motherfuckers ramble about this shit, and naturally feel the need to respect their elders by praising older music.

But it's all fucking garbage, no matter the era. XD
