Is it that hard to pay Akira Toriyama or Weekly Shounen Jump / Kodansha some money? Maybe the royalty cost for manga/anime character is uber high compared to games? But dunno if there's any hard proof on that. Or maybe it's just culture thing, cuz anime/manga is sacred in Japanese and shouldn't be mixed with games one? Who knows. Because Smash has always been focused on video game characters.
