Pedo panic/satanic panic/etc. things have led to vigilante justice, false convictions, and traumatic experiences for many children who parents are trying to "protect' (e.g. trying to get them to confess to bad things that they think happened to them). In addition, it's usually a symptom of conspiracy theorists and often used as an avenue TO conspiracy theories.
