The casino subplot is Finn's entire arc of him deciding to actually be a rebel instead of just "wants to keep his friends safe" you can't cut it out or Finn won't be doing anything at all the whole movie. Leia light speeding the ship would have been a better idea in hindsight, although she was clearly intended to have a bigger role in RoS that they had to reneg on. With how minor Leia's role was in RoS, you could have just replaced Holdo with her completely and it be perfectly fine.
