I do generally think Cold Steel has had better gameplay than the Sky series, though my order would probably be something like Cold Steel III > Sky The 3rd > the others. I always liked the battles themselves in Cold Steel more (with possible exception to some very well designed boss fights in 3rd) but felt Sky had a way better customization system. Cold Steel III though felt like it gave me just enough tools to mess around with that it made up for the previous issues in customization, and even though the combat is "broken" I think it's fun to discover for yourself the right combinations of quartz, etc that turns you into an unstoppable death machine. Though yes, my Trails gameplay priorities lie exclusively in making the casual experience as enjoyable as possible.

As for the news about the changing battle system for the next arc, I will try and withhold judgment until we actually see what it is and how it works but I would be lying if I said I wasn't nervous. Then again I'm in this series for the story anyways so I highly doubt it would be a dealbreaker. Worst case I could just set the difficulty to Easy and do my best to ignore gameplay as much as possible.
