i agree! the explanation is 'they felt like it'

but if you go further to ask why they felt like it- that's the inexplicable part! reasons why it might be tie dus if we were inventing the game from scratch:

1) the real name Titus is pronounced Tie tus
2) Tidus literally washes up on the shore with the tide, pronounced tie d
2a) Tidus' trademark weapon looks like the ocean
