The cops calling the shield an "offensive weapon" really kinda predicted modern day British policing.

Furthermore, I think one of them (Eric Idle, maybe) admitted that they wrote themselves into a corner. I had a film studies professor once describe how it's very hard to write an ending to a purely satirical movie that actually ends up satisfying - you either stray back into conventional storytelling (hero gets girl, epic battle scene, etc), or you end up with something like Holy Grail's ending. To their credit, MP did pull off a satisfying and satirical (albeit a downer if you look past the absurdist humor) ending with Life of Brian.
